Diabetic Assessment

Diabetic patients may be predisposed to foot problems due to changes in Sensation and Circulation to the lower limb.

Sensation - the pain response may be lost in the feet meaning you cannot feel if there is something wrong with your foot, which if left untreated may cause problems. this is commonly referred to as neuropathy.

Circulation - Arteries delivering blood to the feet can become reduced in their effiency and lead to problems with delaying healing and increased susceptibilty to infection.

Management of the diabteic foot is aimed at prevention, which is achieved through education and regular assessment of the foot and lower limb. This will allow early detection of any possible problems which may arise.
A diabetic assessment may include:

Doppler reading to assess the circulation to the feet
Neuro filament testing to detect loss of sensation in part of the feet
Visual inspection of all parts of the feet
